AI Agents Now Generate Over 40% of GitHub Pull Requests

AI-driven autonomous coding is reshaping the software development lifecycle, with over 40% of GitHub pull requests initiated by AI agents in September, up from 17% in March, according to the GitHub Octoverse 2026 report. Speaking at GitHub Universe 2026, Jay Parikh, EVP of CoreAI at Microsoft, highlighted that the traditional linear SDLC is collapsing as autonomous agents increasingly manage core implementation and verification. However, this surge in agentic workflows has strained GitHub's infrastructure, triggering multiple performance incidents and a major global outage earlier this year.
