Amazon has issued an internal memo to software engineers cautioning against relying on superficial metrics to measure AI-driven productivity gains. The company stated that metrics such as token consumption, total AI tools used, code changes, and review counts are deeply flawed and disconnected from actual business impact. Amazon noted that using such indicators as targets risks driving negative outcomes, including increased operational complexity and higher development costs. Instead, the tech giant advised teams to focus on long-term outcomes and customer impact, acknowledging that rigid definitions of AI engineering practices risk becoming quickly antiquated.
