GitHub announced a major infrastructure expansion ahead of GitHub Universe, adding over 4 million CPU cores and 160 petabytes of storage to support surging AI-driven coding activity. The platform recorded 7.38 billion commits in September alone, marking a fivefold monthly increase driven by autonomous agents. Microsoft CoreAI EVP Jay Parikh noted that GitHub is also redesigning its Git architecture to decouple compute and storage for higher throughput. Additionally, GitHub launched Copilot Fusion, an intelligent routing engine with Standard, High, and Max tiers that automatically selects the optimal frontier AI model based on task complexity.
