Google announced that its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite has generated its first artificial intelligence response using an in-orbit, data centre-class tensor processing unit (TPU). Built in partnership with satellite imagery firm Planet and launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission on October 1, the satellite is testing space-based machine learning infrastructure. During a ground-station pass over Svalbard, Norway, Google uplinked prompts to its onboard Gemma 4 open model, successfully receiving an AI-generated haiku alongside telemetry data. The next research phase will evaluate how Google's TPU hardware withstands orbital thermal stress and radiation during extended space operations.
