The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has initiated a comprehensive study to assess the feasibility of deploying small-scale data centres dedicated to artificial intelligence inference workloads across multiple key sectors. Announced during an industry conclave on AI Measure on Thursday, October 22, the initiative explores decentralised compute infrastructure tailored for agriculture, space, manufacturing, healthcare, and legal domains. As demand for low-latency AI processing surges, localized inference infrastructure could provide cost-effective, domain-specific alternatives to massive centralized hyperscaler facilities, potentially enabling faster domestic enterprise AI adoption across vital Indian industries and public sector applications without prohibitive cloud infrastructure overheads.
