India Prepares Financial Infrastructure Shift Toward Asset Tokenisation

Following the widespread adoption of the Unified Payments Interface, India's financial ecosystem is laying the groundwork for real-world asset tokenisation. The Reserve Bank of India is exploring digital asset rails through wholesale central bank digital currency applications and a conceptualised Unified Markets Interface. This proposed next-generation financial market infrastructure aims to enable native on-chain issuance, programmable trading, and atomic settlement for bonds, fund units, and trade receivables. The transition seeks to replicate UPI's interoperable infrastructure model across digital asset ownership and statutory compliance.
