India Semiconductor Mission Explains Chipmaking Value Chain As Phase 2 Begins

India Semiconductor Mission CEO and MeitY Additional Secretary Amitesh Kumar Sinha detailed the economics of chipmaking during Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi. Sinha noted that chip design constitutes roughly half of the semiconductor value chain, with advanced designs costing up to Rs 2,000 crore. To support homegrown innovation, the Indian government has committed Rs 1,27,500 crore to the mission's second phase, notified on August 31, 2026. Phase two builds on earlier initiatives that provided startups free Electronic Design Automation tool access, aiming to establish comprehensive domestic chip manufacturing and packaging capabilities.
