India urgently needs to scale up its battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support rapid renewable power growth, according to clean energy industry stakeholders. The country’s domestic battery cell manufacturing currently supplies under 1% (2 GWh) of its estimated 260 GWh demand pipeline from tenders in 2026. Representatives from Sunkind India, Premier Energies, and Volks Energie cautioned that grid stability requires immediate storage deployment rather than waiting for fully indigenous cell manufacturing. Experts emphasized that storage infrastructure is vital to address solar power intermittency and balance peak electricity demand across India.
