Conversational artificial intelligence startup Character.AI has officially filed for bankruptcy just five years after its inception. As part of the restructuring process, the interactive chatbot platform has agreed to sell select assets to entertainment giant Disney for $20 million. Founded by former Google researchers, Character.AI gained early popularity by allowing users to create and converse with custom AI personalities. However, mounting operational expenses, intense compute costs, and monetization challenges have strained the business. The asset sale to Disney marks a sudden collapse for one of consumer AI’s most prominent early breakout platforms.
