The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has suspended the food licences and registrations of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket. The regulatory action follows discoveries that poisonous Datura fruits and seeds were being sold as food products on their digital platforms. Authorities directed the ecommerce companies to immediately remove all listings, advertisements, and promotions offering the toxic plant for human consumption. During official hearings, Amazon failed to submit an explanation, while Swiggy Instamart requested more time to demonstrate compliance. State regulators warned that selling toxic botanical items poses critical public health hazards.
