The Maharashtra government has directed bike taxi aggregators, including Rapido, Uber, and Ola, to transition completely to electric vehicles by July 2027. Under directives issued by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the state transport department has asked platforms to phase out petrol-powered bike taxis over a nine-month period under the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules, 2025. Operators with provisional licenses will receive up to nine months to comply. The mandate follows pushback from the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Welfare Association, which raised concerns over high upfront EV acquisition costs for gig drivers and inadequate charging infrastructure across the state.
