Meta has agreed to pay approximately $18 billion to settle lawsuits brought by a bipartisan coalition of 52 attorneys general across US states and territories regarding teenage mental health harms. Under the agreement, Meta will implement mandatory platform safeguards for users under 18 in participating US jurisdictions. These include a default two-hour daily limit on Instagram and Facebook, night restrictions, muted notifications during school hours, non-algorithmic feed options, and stricter parental controls. However, Meta has not committed to introducing these protections in international markets, including India, directing inquiries to standard company statements.
