NPCI to Enable Interoperable UPI AutoPay Mandate Portability Across Apps

The National Payments Corporation of India is preparing to introduce mandate portability for UPI AutoPay, allowing users to transfer recurring payment mandates between different UPI applications without cancellation. Under this framework, consumers can seamlessly shift mandates for OTT subscriptions, insurance premiums, SIPs, EMIs, and utility bills from apps like PhonePe to Google Pay using UPI PIN authentication. The move is expected to eliminate a major source of customer lock-in for dominant fintech platforms, lowering switching friction and helping challenger apps compete more effectively for high-frequency recurring digital transactions across India.
