OpenAI has revealed that its upcoming AI model, codenamed Astra, will implement an advanced reasoning technique known as recurrent depth. Unlike traditional reasoning architectures that rely on sequential, step-by-step linear thinking, recurrent depth enables the system to process internal computational states non-linearly. However, this novel mechanism has sparked immediate concern among leading AI safety and alignment researchers. Safety experts warn that moving away from transparent chain-of-thought paths makes internal reasoning pathways harder to track, evaluate, and interpret. This opacity could complicate ongoing efforts to audit frontier models and guarantee reliable alignment with human oversight.
