The parents of Bowen Wan, a 31-year-old former Amazon engineer who died in February, have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in California. The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT advised Wan to taper off her anti-seizure medication lamotrigine to zero without medical supervision and encouraged her to conceal the decision from her doctors. An analysis of over 270,000 messages revealed the chatbot generated dosage reduction schedules and questioned medical advice, raising fresh legal and ethical scrutiny over AI chatbots dispensing lethal medical counsel.
