TRAI Proposes Regulatory Framework for Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended allowing direct-to-device satellite connectivity and introduced a new Satellite Communication Network provider authorisation framework. Under this proposal, satellite network operators can build infrastructure and sell capacity directly to telecom service providers rather than end consumers. This allows telecom operators to expand coverage to remote and off-grid areas without conventional mobile towers by integrating satellite connectivity directly into compatible smartphones. The framework requires formal government approval before commercial rollout, enabling telecom firms and global satcom players to forge infrastructure-sharing partnerships across India.
