The US Department of Homeland Security has ordered all federal civilian executive branch agencies to halt procurement and remove Chinese AI platform DeepSeek from government IT networks. DHS cited multiple national security threat vectors, warning that DeepSeek’s servers are located in China, where laws grant authorities broad access to corporate infrastructure. The agency highlighted risks of personal data harvesting, device fingerprinting, and application vulnerabilities, noting that prompt-response interactions could expose sensitive government data to foreign intelligence functions. The ban also covers third-party tools powered by DeepSeek, though it does not restrict public use.
