Zoho co-founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu stated that India should look to China as a guru for building deep technological capabilities rather than remaining reliant on IT services outsourcing. Speaking at TechSparks 2026 in Bengaluru, Vembu emphasized that China successfully developed and retained ownership of critical intellectual property, allowing it to capture disproportionate economic value globally. He noted that although Indian engineers perform significant technical work for multinational corporations, India misses out on high-margin profits because it lacks proprietary technology ownership, drawing parallels to industrial development across Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.
